Wednesday Words

Wednesday Words are bite-sized training tips emailed on Wednesdays (not necessarily every Wednesday but always on Wednesdays).

The biggest limiter to most triathletes isn't lack of effort or motivation or ability; it's lack of knowledge. They often have inefficient mechanics and don't realize it. They don't optimize their training time. They have the wrong training focus. They don't correctly regulate their training intensity and perform useless or counter-productive training sessions. They train beyond points of diminishing return. They can't discern whether their training plan is quality or crud. They can't distinguish good training advice or articles from junk. The list goes on.

The high price they pay for this lack of knowledge is less than peak performance and injury. Both of these are certain.

But it doesn't have to be this way. It's true that the prospects of learning all there is to know about putting together a solid swim, bike, and run is a daunting task, especially for a beginner. And for the experienced triathlete, mastering the finer points of training and racing can be an even greater challenge. The key to success in triathlon starts with your mind.

Receiving Wednesday Words is an easy way to continue your triathlon education helping you to improve the effectiveness of your training and racing. Each bite-sized tip is focused on a single word (or phrase). In addition to an easy-to-understand definition of the word, it briefly explains related concepts and their importance in triathlon training and racing. In most cases, it recommends specific ways that you can improve your training or race performance.

TriLife Perspective

As Christ-followers, we often find ourselves in the same situation as a triathlete with limited knowledge of how to train and race well. We're not experiencing the abundant life that we desire. Our spiritual training is aimless or non-existent. We have trouble seeing God's will and purpose for us amidst the chaos and futility of this present world.

As with the triathlete, it doesn't have to be this way. Jesus came that we might have life and have it abundantly (John 10:10). To experience His fullness, we need to focus on Him, the Word.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
—John 1:1,14

We need to focus on the Word, Jesus. But we can't stop after only adjusting our focus. We need to be hungry for knowledge of Him. Just like our physical transformation through physical training, spiritual transformation also begins with the mind. We must seek to know Him through time in prayer and studying the scripture.

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
—Romans 12:2

Focus on Him. Know Him. What next?

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
—2 Timothy 3:16-17

Focus on the Word. Increase your knowledge of Him and renew your mind. Put your knowledge into action in every good work for which He has prepared you.

The Wednesday Word may be acceptable for your triathlon training, but spiritually, try to digest a bite-sized chunk of scripture every day and spend time with the Word in prayer.
